My older brother and I worked at the San Jose Fairgrounds selling concessions in the stands for many years at the SJ mile and dirt track races. I sold peanuts and my brother sold cola. We made a few bucks and got free admission, which was my real motivation for working that job. Good times and great memories
@ i Heard a supposed Story That when Dick Man wanted to intimidate the Competition, He would tell all who could hear. OK Wich One of You S O Bs. Is gonna Get 2d place. Fearless Dude.
I'm pretty sure that comment was attributed to Gary Nixon, who was a noted trash talker...
@@phillybeef211pretty sure Larry Bird said that too
The 1st guy unloading his bike, Mert Lawill, is one of the 3 guys riding on the beach in, "On Any Sunday." The other 2 were Steve McQueen and Malcom Smith. Mert's bike in the movie was a Greeves with a Harley tank. (Because he was sponsored by HD) Great shots of Romero having a smoke between heats. They called him "Burrito." He even had it painted on his tank. Less pc time and nobody was mad and everyone had a great time! Check out Dick Mann's holeshot in the 1970 Daytona 200. There guys also road raced.
on any sunday lives on❤
just watched Hells Angels On Wheels, 1967. The bad guys go to Sonny's place on Middlefield road and then they do some crimes.
I met Ricky back in the mid 80's when the boys at American Honda were first building that amazing RS750 - incredible human being- GOAT,without question- . RIP Rivky, Rodney Farris and Lance Jones-
When engines were 'Air Cooled" and Men were 'Water Cooled". ;-)
I sure hope that “Tiger” Gene Romero wore gloves for the race! What a badass! I saw him at a dirt race in Phoenix (Manzanita) in the mid 70s. Not a points race. He showed up. Unloaded. Whipped everybody. For a crew, he bought his own Trophy Girl, in hot pants, to boot! Like I said, a badass.
I remember all those guys. Subscribed to Cycle World, which covered racing. Robert E Lee dominated the OKC half mile the summers of '70-'71 as I was there most Saturday nights. Great years to watch flattrack.
My grandpa used to race for the united Yamaha team for them in the early 70s and early 80s
Crying shame this track no longer exists.
you used to be able to hear these races city wide. i didn't ever get to see much of them in person, but i always loved the sound of thunder and you could always tell when someone wiped out because all the sounds would quickly cut out for a few minutes before starting right back up.
I got me one ❤
Larry Lee Johnson in Miami Florida. I 2as born and raised in San Jose California. Raced 1/2 mile San Jose and Gerden (Ascot Park) In the 60s and 70s on a Bultaco and Ossa.
Ricky - 6 in a row! I was at the same tracks as him when we were kids (he was an expert and I was a novice) but we were at the same tracks! Those guys always put on a great show. :-)
Mert Mert that Little Squirt🤣….I used to Race MX with his Son Joe 🥳🏁
watching this again and again ricky a true legend for everything in life
Hard to believe that a multiple NASCAR cup champion was it one time providing color commentary and on the ground interviews small dirt track in Wisconsin. Jimmie Johnson!
Just in here thinking about you Ricky my health bad I'm coming to see you soon
God bless you sir hope you’re well!
I remember being one of the crazy fools in the stands rooting for my (Brother(s) Love this! 7/ 47/ 87/19/84y
Outstanding!! Had the great pleasure of seeing that race live amongst many at Syracuse. Truly a time of great riders and great bikes. Thanks for sharing!
a Triumph won it
I remember riding at the motocross track at Laguna Seca in 1993, and I was just playing around on my Yamaha 490. One slow corner was about a foot deep of dusty dirt and apparently Ricky was trying to pass me and I punched it and made him wipe out with all the dirt in his face. Later he cam up to me and gave me his goggles. At the time, I had no idea who he was, and was baffled. I didn't have a good pair of goggles so I just used them! I should have saved them!!
As it was a litmus test race track. To be a successful pro back then required the ability to be successful at Ascot.
"Rocket" Ricky Graham! Took a friend to his first dirt track race to the Indy mile and we went into the infield so we could go down to the fence between turns 3 and 4, he was totally blown away! Graham won that race and we went down to the podium after the race and he got to get close to Graham and some other riders, he couldn't believe how small they were in comparison to what they could do on those bikes! I loved watching Graham ride along with Parker, Springsteen, Boody, Shobert, they could really put on a show!!
I've ridden that track twice and really enjoy Monterey.
I wanted to flat track growing up..I was14 and this was my goal...I motocrossed till I 17..My folks said no😢... thanks for the memories..
I just saw Jim Odom and Jim Rice last night at Barnaby's...
I raced in southern Oregon in the early 70's...loved flat track...I wasn't of these quality of riders, but it sure was a fun time!
Rember when the AMA made Honda restrict their carb.2mm ? But the Harleys stayed the same..????????..watched this for the first time . ..Put a smile on my face. And a tear to my eye..R.I.P.
Rember when the AMA made Honda restrict their carb.2mm ? But the Harleys stayed the same..????????
Thank you for posting that . my friend who's Harley-Davidson all the time t h i n k s that Harley-Davidson is the fastest thing around and he doesn't realize and I've tried to convince him Harley-Davidson has been paying for rule changes all their career since 1968 remember when Honda kicked the Harley's asses and then the AMA made Honda restrictor carburetors 2 mm smaller than the Harley's
I was going to say how the the XR750 Harley Davidson was built using old technologies, which it was, when you compared it to the Honda special built flat track motor, you know, the Honda with overhead cams and 4 valves per... but I was looking up the HD XR750 and found this fascinating article on the history of the XR Harley... www.cycleworld.com/story/motorcycle-racing/50-years-of-the-harley-davidson-xr750-evolution/
The man who single handedly kicked Harley Davidsons' ass at their own game!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank You... I've always thought Harley $$$$ The AmA to change the rules on there behalf
My cousin Rod Spencer raced there
I rode there for 25 years. The BLM closed it down. They didn't want people to get anywhere near that mine that was clearly fenced off with lots of activity going on. There is something in that mine the government doesn't want anyone to know about.
I gotta get 3rd or go to the hospital. I dig Carnations man. Burrito.
So Kool! I Loved Doing This.
I was there 😊
I couldn't stand Ricky back then but they both really were stand up guys I respect Ricky now though
Was King Kenny riding a Yamaha?
Who was 9?
I rode against Rick on the Ascot half-mile as both a novice and a junior. As a novice Rick would launch off the TT jump but when landing he'd keep the front wheel in the air all the way to the right-hander. Never saw anyone else do that!
Anyone notice that Gene isn't wearing gloves? Would've been interesting to hear his thoughts on that.
That was a fairly common practice back in the '60s and early '70s.... Some riders felt more in control with bare hands
@@phillybeef211 Doable at San Jose, but not so much at Ascot! In addition to gloves, hand guards and shin guards many of us put a layer of foam rubber under our leathers. Thanks for the upload, those were the days...
Long live the creek
That's the way it was. Good to hear line-up of riders.
epic best place in the world to ride
It is so nostalgic to see how those US ex-dirt bikers dominated and revolutionized the sport. King Kenny Roberts. Steady Eddie Lawson. Fast Freddie Spencer. Randy Mamola. Kevin Schwantz. Wayne Rainey. A crazy amount of talent for merely a decade or so.
Douglas Polen too
daymn that was fast
Thank you for releasing this video. WE all had a bunch of fun downing this project. Once again thank you from the Clapp brothers racing/Searsville racin
Grahm embarrassed H.D. on a factory Honda after they proved their point to the motor company Honda pulled out Grahm came back as a privateer and kicked Harley's ass again even with extra weight and restrictors in the intakes. One heck of a rider.
Thank you for preaching to my choir man you are spot-on thanks
